Ingredients:
500g (1lb) ground beef (80% fat for juiciness)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
Instructions:
Prepare the beef mixture:
In a large bowl, place the ground beef.
Add the salt, pepper and garlic powder to the beef. Gently mix the ingredients with your hands or a fork until the spices are evenly distributed. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the patties tough.
Shape the patties:
Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions.
Shape each portion into a ball, then gently flatten it into a patty about 1.5cm (1/2in) thick. Use your thumb to make a small depression in the middle of each patty – this helps them cook evenly without puffing up in the middle.
Cook the patties:
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat.
Once the pan is hot, place the patties in the pan. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or adjust the cooking time to your preference (longer for well-done, shorter for rare).
Avoid pressing on the patties while cooking, as this can draw out the juices and make them dry.
Rest and serve:
Once the patties are cooked to your liking, remove them from the pan and let them rest for a few minutes.
Serve on burger buns, over a salad, or with a side of mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables.
Optional toppings:
Cheese: Add a slice of cheese on top of the patties during the last minute of cooking to make a cheeseburger.
Toppings: Serve with classic toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles.
Sauce: Spread a little mayo, mustard, or ketchup on the burger buns for extra flavor.
